John Ainslie
The Gentleman and Farmer&Apos;S Pocket Companion and Assistant, with Tables for Computing the Weight of Hay, Cattle, Sheep, & Hogs, &C by Measurement
Edinburgh, T Brown, A Constable et al. 1802. First edition. Leather. A first edition of Ainslie's scarce and fascinating 'The Gentleman and Farmer's Pocket Companion&apos. The binding is the original one and is correspondingly worn (this was a work designed to be referred to regularly). Thus this is a very rare survival and all the more pleasing for being so original. Bound in leather with gilt decoration. John Ainslie, 1745 - 1828, was a cartographer and land surveyor. He was apprenticed to a surveyor, and surveyed Bedfordshire, Buckingshire, and Yorkshire from 1766 to 1770. After misfortune with a map of Jedburgh and its surrounding areas, Ainslie eventually returned to surveying counties, and his maps were published. He settled in Edinburgh from around 1778, publishing charts and maps of Scotland, impressive works including a great map of Scotland that was not superseded for twenty years. "With the turn of the century Ainslie turned to agricultural improvement, publishing The Gentleman and Farmer's Pocket Book, Companion and Assistant..and a Comprehensive Treatise on Land Surveying in 1812." (DNB) In a full calf binding. There is some wear to the extremities, including some bumping and rubbing, with loss to the spine. The rear board is missing, and the front board is held by the cords only, and could possibly detach in the post, even after careful packaging. The last leaf is detached. The binding is generally firm. Internally the pages have slight browning with intermittent spots and slightly browned handling marks. Good Only . Ill.: None. Good Only .
